The Schism
A FRACTURED SYSTEM
Humanity split into factions: The Magi wielded reality like a program; The Regs, an unchanged majority who relied on cybernetic upgrades to keep up; and Mutants, whose bodies evolved in unpredictable ways due to an unknown glitch in the system.
MAGI
Able to wield code like magic, believed to be blessed by the algorithm. Maintain power by manipulating the masses.
REGS
Status-driven consumers of cyber products developed by corporate tech companies.
MUTANTS
Supernatural abilities awaken in their DNA, but they become exploited and oppressed for being different.
Sovereign Empire
THE FOUNDATION
The Magi rose to power believing themselves the supreme beings—the first chosen by a godlike deity, The Operating System. They maintained control through a doctrine of “stability versus chaos,” branding mutants as dangerous outcasts for their unpredictable nature.
The Magus Administration fuels fear to manipulate the masses, using mutants as scapegoats for society’s ills. Most Regs (regular humans) have aligned with the Magi, seduced by the consumerist dream of climbing the corporate ladder and earning status through the latest cybernetic upgrades. Though they lack the mutants’ innate powers, these enhancements offer them a fleeting sense of superiority.
In Sovereign, mutants are forced into low-wage labor and branded with identification barcodes on their faces. Those who resist are exiled, or sentenced to death.
Neon Energy
THE INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX
Tensions rose between the factions and a power struggle ensued, war broke out throughout the system to secure territories rich in Neon, the precious energy resource used to power all technologies within the system. Nations built war machines and weapons of mass destruction which would forever alter the face of the planet.
Aftermath
BUG INFESTATION
In a desperate attempt to end the conflict, an experimental neon-nuclear missile was launched, obliterating an entire city and giving birth to a toxic wasteland causing one of the most deadly disasters in history.
The site of the impact festered, a toxic forest of fungus and strange vegetation began to take hold, mutant bugs grew to monstrous size. These insectoid horrors, called Vexnids, continue to haunt the system to this day.
The Firewall
ULTIMATE DEFENSE
To protect against the Vexnid plague, a massive firewall was constructed from secure code protecting civilization from outsider threats. The wasteland, beyond the safety of the firewall became a dangerous survival-of-the fittest wildlands where mutant creatures roam.
Integrity Authority
PROTECTORS OF THE CODE
The Integrity Authority (IA) was formed to stamp out anomalies and bugs in the system. An elite squad of agents dedicated to track and terminate threats.
